چکیده

Nearly 40-50% of total global photosynthesis occurring on earth is primarily due to the presence of these algal populations [1]. Microalgae have been identified as a viable feedstock for biofuels due to their efficient capabilities to convert sunlight and CO2 to biomass (which is of great importance for the feed, fuel and chemical industries), can thrive in fresh to saline waters, and the ability to grow on non-arable lands that has led their path towards the replacement of fossil fuels with sustainable renewable biofuels pertaining to ever increasing energy demands [2].

Microalgal triacylglycerols as feedstocks for biofuel production: perspectives and advances.

Microalgae represent an exceptionally diverse but highly specialized group of micro-organisms adapted to various ecological habitats. Many microalgae have the ability to produce substantial amounts (e.g. 20-50% dry cell weight) of triacylglycerols (TAG) as a storage lipid under photo-oxidative stress or other adverse environmental conditions. Fatty acids, the building blocks for TAGs and all ot...

A Review on the Assessment of Stress Conditions for Simultaneous Production of Microalgal Lipids and Carotenoids

Microalgal species are potential resource of both biofuels and high-value metabolites, and their production is growth dependent. Growth parameters can be screened for the selection of novel microalgal species that produce molecules of interest. In this context our review confirms that, autotrophic and heterotrophic organisms have demonstrated a dual potential, namely the ability to produce lipi...

Editorial: Biotechnology of Microalgae, Based on Molecular Biology and Biochemistry of Eukaryotic Algae and Cyanobacteria

Microalgae, including eukaryotic algae and cyanobacteria, comprise a diverse group of microscopic unicellular photosynthetic organisms that inhabit almost all ecological niches. Recently, energy and resource production using microalgae have received a great deal of attention (Banerjee et al., 2016). Several species of microalgae are commercially available. Microalgae produce high-value products...

Simultaneous improvement in production of microalgal biodiesel and high-value alpha-linolenic acid by a single regulator acetylcholine

BACKGROUND Photoautotrophic microalgae are a promising avenue for sustained biodiesel production, but are compromised by low yields of biomass and lipids at present. We are developing a chemical approach to improve microalgal accumulation of feedstock lipids as well as high-value alpha-linolenic acid which in turn might provide a driving force for biodiesel production. RESULTS We demonstrate ...

Choreography of Transcriptomes and Lipidomes of Nannochloropsis Reveals the Mechanisms of Oil Synthesis in Microalgae.

To reveal the molecular mechanisms of oleaginousness in microalgae, transcriptomic and lipidomic dynamics of the oleaginous microalga Nannochloropsis oceanica IMET1 under nitrogen-replete (N+) and N-depleted (N-) conditions were simultaneously tracked. At the transcript level, enhanced triacylglycerol (TAG) synthesis under N- conditions primarily involved upregulation of seven putative diacylgl...
